How to Become a Friend

You can easily become a good friend. Even if you already have friends, you can always have more.

Steps

  1. Get to know what the person is like. If he or she is just simply not your type, then shrug the idea off and try elsewhere.
  2. Briefly introduce yourself to the person.
  3. Get to know the person better, but don't get too personal. Ask him where he lives, what are their interests, or sometimes even a simple "What's up?" will do. Try to get a conversation going.
  4. Talk about fun topics that most people can relate to like (happy) childhood memories and food. Even the weather is not too bad sometime, but don't make it an obsession.
  5. Don't brag or do anything stupid, meaning that you shouldn't talk about things that will make the other person feel bad. If you do, they will probably get annoyed and leave or worse, retaliate in an unfavorable way.
  6. Speak in a friendly tone, and try to act casual.
  7. If the other person starts talking about politics, religion, sex, and all these hardcore topics; simply try to deviate as politics are bound to be a matter of disagreement. If he or she continues, just listen and try not to add fuel to the topic.
  8. Be polite or "smart-casual".
  9. Use decent humor where you feel appropriate. If you use it in the wrong place at the wrong time, the results are probably not going to be positive.
  10. Too much insincerity and flattering can totally blow your cover, so try to avoid using them too much.
  11. End the conversation at a good point and with good standing. Try not to end when the person is in the middle of discussing something, wait for the discussion to be over, and give a response before announcing that you have to go or something.

Tips

  • Repeat this method if the person you wanted to be friends with does not approve.
  • Having friends on the Internet is notably easier than having friends in real life, for obvious reasons...
  • Don't forget the handshakes at the end of the conversation.
  • Leave a nice remark, such as "Nice talking to you, and have a nice day!", or something similar to suit the situation.
  • Sincere compliments are very important in a good conversation.
  • Remember to make eye contact.

Warnings

  • Don't try to make friends with people you don't want make friends with. It will most likely end in a break.
  • Just because you followed these steps perfectly doesn't mean they will be your friend. It just gives them a good impression and opens up the opportunity for friendship.
